Barr Group Offers Free Embedded C Coding Standard for Safety

In a significant step towards enhancing safety in the embedded systems sector, Barr Group has announced that its Embedded C Coding Standard® is now freely available to the public. This decision comes in response to concerning data from the 2017 Embedded Systems Safety & Security Survey, which revealed that approximately 20% of developers working on potentially hazardous Internet-connected devices do not follow safety-related coding standards during software creation.

Michael Barr, the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Barr Group, stressed the critical need for adopting safety-oriented best practices. "The survey underscores an urgent requirement for the widespread implementation of these practices," Barr remarked. He pointed out that while software bugs are an unavoidable aspect of complex systems, there are effective and economical strategies to reduce them, thereby boosting product safety. The Embedded C Coding Standard offers guidelines that assist engineering teams in significantly decreasing bugs, thus enhancing the safety of products.

The Barr Group coding standard is designed to align with the more rigorous MISRA-C Guidelines, enabling companies to implement it either independently or alongside MISRA-C. It also includes stylistic rules that improve code readability, which are not addressed by MISRA-C.
